Initial situation
The ETH Library of ETH Zurich operates ETHorama, an innovative, map-based web platform that provides digital access to historical documents and the associated locations. The first version was technically outdated and needed comprehensive modernization - both in the backend and in the administration app for managing content and data. The goal was to completely redesign the application in order to operate and further develop it in a future-proof manner.
Development of the map-based platform
The implementation was carried out in close cooperation with the project team of the ETH Library. Stakeholder feedback was incorporated early in the project and transferred to the optimization of functions.
The ETHorama web platform was redesigned and extensively redesigned to enable intuitive use on mobile devices. At the same time, a high-performance backend was created, designed for sustainability and longevity. Additionally, an app was designed, styled, and developed to ensure smooth data capture. Extensive inventory data was migrated and prepared for the new system, and the platform is continuously being developed.
The result: Comprehensive modernization without compromises
The modernization was successfully completed and a migration was successfully carried out. The migration was no small task, as since 2014 around 42,836 images, 20,776 texts, and 1,390 historical maps were provided via ETHorama for about 6,533 locations and areas.
With the comprehensive modernization, the ETH Library is now able to sustainably operate and continuously expand the platform.
